You can't think of the room as $30
There is no missing dollar, because the room is $25+ the two dollars the bagman took ($27) + the three the men got back ($30). So there was never a missing dollar, math just won't work in some ways. *ADMIN NOTE: The question is misleading. There IS no missing dollar. Originally, the room price was 30.00 which is divisible by 3, or, 10.00 each. HOWEVER, the room was reduced to 25.00. 25 is not divisible by three, it is actually 8.33~, so each man did not pay 9.00 for the room, he paid 8.33. The remaining 67 cents from each man is what made up the $2.00 the bellhop kept. 30.00 original cash. -25 room price ____________________ 5.00 3 given back to men + 2 to bellhop = the $5.00 difference.
